Key Stage 3

Pupils have the opportunity to start their study of French in Year 8. All students have a free choice of 2 languages to study from years 8-10. Pupils in years 8-10 will have three periods of French per week. In these classes most of the time is spent developing the pupils’ confidence and ability to speak the language. A lively colourful textbook is used and the course offers ample opportunity for listening, speaking, reading and writing plus IT activities.

Key Stage 4

In year 11 pupils may choose to continue their study of French as a single language option or along with a second modern language. In years 11 and 12, the GCSE syllabus followed is that of the English board AQA.

Post 16

Students may elect to study French at AS or A level. The syllabus chosen by the French Department is CCEA. The aim of this course is to develop the skills acquired in the first five years and to enable students to speak and write fluently in French and to perfect their comprehension skills. The Department’s aim is to stimulate the pupils’ awareness of and deepen their interest in French civilisation and culture. Pupils are encouraged to read extensively from the wide range of materials available in the school library.

The French Department has the invaluable services of a French assistant, Mme M.P. Warnock, a native speaker of the language, who works with students at this level.

Extra-curricular activities

Links with France are encouraged right from Year 8 where pupils have the opportunity to establish pen-pal links. Trips to France are organised regularly in the month of June for pupils in years 9-11.

More detailed information on all courses mentioned above is available in the Options Booklet
