Key Stage 3
German is offered as a modern language from year 8 and can be studied to A-Level. Currently there is one class in Years 8, 9 and 10 and 3 periods a week are allocated to the subject. Initially most of the emphasis is on understanding and responding to spoken German, while not neglecting reading and writing in the language. The coursebook used is "Klasse" offering ample opportunity for role-play practice, listening exercises, writing and I.T. activities.
Key Stage 4
At the end of Year 10 students can opt to continue their study of the language for GCSE. At the moment the syllabus followed is provided by AQA board.
Post 16
Students may choose to study German as an AS or A-Level subject. For this new AS/A-Level exam we have chosen the CCEA syllabus. The aim of the course is to equip students with an in-depth knowledge of the language, enabling them to converse fluently across a wide range of topics and write German with a high degree of accuracy, as well as offering insights into the culture and civilisation of German-speaking countries.
