Music is taught to all classes in years 8-10. The curriculum follows closely the requirements of the national curriculum with its emphasis on listening, performing and composing. All students will play recorder and many classes will also follow a short course on tin whistle. Composing is normally pursued as a group activity based on such concepts as melodic variation, form, rhythm, creative music and music & advertising. Listening activities encompass a broad range of styles and genres. Music can be taken as a GCSE subject either over two years or as an accelerated one-year course. The latter is taught at lunchtime and therefore provides students with an extra GCSE qualification.
Music at AS/A-level is a versatile enrichment subject as well as opening an increasing number of doors to careers in the music technology, sound recording and popular music fields. Most of our A-level music students proceed to the study of music at third level institutions.
