SENIOR DEBATING SUCCESS

SENIOR DEBATING SUCCESS

Congratulations to our Senior Debating Team who have recently enjoyed success in the NI Schools’ Debating Competition.

In a competition with over 80 teams, Caitilin McManus (13-5) was selected as a judges’ nominee for the Best Individual Speaker Final at Parliament Buildings, Stormont on 27th April. Without prior knowledge of the side she would have to argue, Caitilin had to prepare and a deliver a six-minute speech on the motion “This house would sink the Titanic celebrations”. Caitilin locked horns in the cut and thrust of a hotly contested debate with students from Bangor Grammar, Belfast High, Rathmore Grammar, Thornhill College and Foyle and Londonderry College to emerge as a worthy winner of the competition.

Earlier in the competition, Caitilin and her debating partner, Caitriona McCaffrey (13-7) were defeated as semi-finalists by Dalriada School who went on to win the team competition. However, for the power and panache they demonstrated in beating Victoria College, RBAI and Slemish College on their way to the semis, the girls were presented with £250 for school debating and trophies and certificates for themselves. Well done, Caitriona and Caitilin!
