Junior Young Environmentalist 2012

Green Teens Scoop All Irelands ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Award 2012

Students from Our Lady’s & St. Patrick's College Knock successfully won The ECO UNESCO All Ireland Young Environmentalist Overall and Junior Waste Awards 2012. The Awards was held in the Mansion House in Dublin on 8th May.

Students launched an Anti-Litter Campaign which involved students researching the environmental issue of litter and carry out a litter pick up in the college. Students worked very hard and designed a fun and exciting campaign which encouraged the school community to “Wake Up To Waste.” Students raised awareness through designing displays, anti-litter t-shirts, and masks. The group also went global by linking up with two schools, one in Croatia and the other in Seattle, Washington, where ideas on litter prevention were shared. The students were amongst the 60 lucky groups who were selected for the finals from almost 4,000 young people throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland who showcased their projects at regional ‘Dragon’s Den’ style ECO-Dens.   The Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA) is an all-island environmental awards programme for young people. The YEA has been running since 1999 and aims to support and honour young people, who take part in environmental projects which protect their local environment, prevent environmental damage and promote environmental awareness.  Miss Collins says “"It is extremely heartening to witness the levels of interest and passion exhibited by these young people in protecting our environment. They are extremely deserving of this prestigious award and an inspiration to us all. Well done!”
