‘Every child in our school is an important human person, created by God, entrusted to us by parents and society and worthy of unconditional respect for his/her dignity’ (Excerpt from Discipline Policy). Bullying is the wilful, conscious desire to hurt or threaten or frighten someone else. It may involve threats of violence, actual violence, verbal malice or exclusion of the victim. All bullying is aggression, either physical, verbal or psychological. Any behaviour which is the illegitimate use of power in order to hurt others is bullying behaviour. W e place great importance on the prevention of bullying. The school curriculum and the Pastoral Care programme will be used to combat bullying. We endeavour to ensure that teachers and other members of staff have a high level of awareness of bullying as a problem and that they have strategies to tackle bullying. S tudents are made aware that the College cares about bullying. We endeavour to make them realise that bullying is never acceptable and we encourage them to speak out when bullying occurs. P arents are informed of the school policy regarding bullying and are encouraged to contact the school if they have any concerns about this matter. Implementation of College Policy on Bullying Staff Awareness S taff have read and discussed the School Policy on Bullying and there is on-going discussion and planning at Pastoral Care meetings. Pupil Awareness T he question of Bullying is addressed in Tutorials, at Assemblies, in ’Education for Love’ classes and through the Student Mentor Programme. Tutors discuss the various kinds of bullying and endeavour to make the students realise that bullying is never acceptable and that they should speak out when bullying occurs. It is made clear to students that all instances of bullying, including bullying related to a student’s disability, will be treated with the utmost seriousness. Structures T eachers/Tutors can deal with incidents of bullying using their own initiative but the Head of Year & School must be informed. She/he may consult the Counselling service to see if there are any relevant background factors relating to the bully and/or victim. Alternatively the matter can be passed on directly to the Head of Year / School or Vice-Principal in charge of Pastoral Care. Student s who witness or are victims of bullying including bullying related to disability are actively encouraged to report the matter to any teacher whom they feel they can relate to and trust. Parents who have any concerns about bullying should discuss the matter with the relevant Tutor, Year Head, Head of School or the Vice Principal (Pastoral) without delay. I t is vitally important that all reported cases are followed up and are seen to be dealt with successfully and effectively. Parent Awareness C ommuniqué (the College’s parents information bulletin) and the Year 8 handbook contain material on the topic of bullying. If it is deemed necessary, further information may be conveyed to parents through the usual channels of communication.
