Key Stage 3

In Year 8 students explore Diversity and Inclusion as well as Human Rights and Social Responsibility. In Year 9 students examine Equality and Social Justice and in Year 10 Democracy and Participation. Classes are given two periods a week which rotate with ICT.

Key Stage 4

All Year 11 and 12 students undertake the GCSE. It has four units - Local and Global Citizenship, Personal Development, Employability and two Controlled Assessment Tasks. It is delivered in three/four periods per week.

The Citizenship and Learning for Life and Work Programme promotes active learning, participation and essential skills such as communication, literacy, using mathematics and ICT. Action Based Projects are considered vital components of Citizenship Education and provide the opportunity for students to develop their interests and engage with a particular issue. They also aim to establish closer links with the wider school community.

In recent years we have successfully completed Action Based Projects in close collaboration with Save the Children. We welcome impute of NGOs and strongly support the work of Trocaire. We have an annual conference for our Year 9 students on poverty which has proved particularly successful. The Cedar Foundation also works closely with our Year 9 students to promote equality and social justice for groups with disabilities, while George Newell from the Inner East Belfast Community Project works with our Year 10 students on strategies to combat Racism and Sectarianism.
