Key Stage 3

Spanish is taught in the school from Year 8 onwards. On entry to the College students select 2 modern languages to study at Key Stage 3. The main textbook used is Amigos. Many online resources are now available to our Year 9 and 10 pupils on Fronter which can be accessed from their iPad. Pupils take part in role-plays, singing songs, games and are encouraged to work in groups to enhance their communication skills in the target language whilst also grasping new vocabulary and grammar points.

Key Stage 4

We currently have 4 teaching groups in year 11 and follow the AQA GCSE specification. The text book used is AQA GCSE Spanish, which is a recent publication and includes a multitude of online resources such as Kerboodle. The course is made up of 60% Controlled Assessment in the areas of writing and speaking and 40% examination made up of two papers (20% reading and 20% listening).

Post 16

The number of students opting to do post 16 Spanish has increased in recent years. The examinations board used is CCEA. Students avail of 9 teaching classes per week as well as 1 conversation class per week with Guada, the Spanish assistant, on a one to one basis.  They are also encouraged to spend the Summer of their AS Year at one of the courses available for A-Level Spanish students in Salamanca. This greatly enhances their oral skills and boosts confidence, something which is vital for the external oral examination.

Spanish provides students with a greatly enriched view of the world around them as well as Spanish language skills that will prove useful in many professional occupations.  With its emphasis on research, writing and creative and analytical thought, learning Spanish prepares students for graduate studies in Spanish and most professional schools, including law, business, and education, and medicine, and for work in professions such as law, teaching, business, management, and publishing. Many Spanish students combine their Spanish studies with other areas to prepare for career opportunities in international business, government, travel or communications, where knowledge of a foreign language and of foreign cultures is essential.

Workshops and talks are regularly organised for our senior pupils to inform them of potential degree or career pathways. Please visit out languages Twitter Page @OLSPCKLanguages to view the extra-curricular and career activities organised within our department.
